Spring Sports Predictions: NBA Playoffs & NFL Draft Insights

The sports world is as busy as ever. The College Basketball tournament and the NFL Draft are happening. The NBA and NHL seasons are coming to an end. MLB is kicking off. I have some thoughts, ideas, and predictions to share.

·       Someone must explain the animosity certain basketball people have for LeBron James and Caitlin Clark.   I don’t understand how, at this point, you can’t sit back and appreciate LeBron’s fantastic career. Some people seem afraid to compliment LeBron. They think it means they are insulting Jordan, Kobe, Magic, or Bird.   Newsflash: their careers are over. Nothing that LeBron does changes the successes and failures they have had.   Enjoy LeBron, as you won’t see someone do this for this long in your lifetime.

As for Caitlin Clark, I am just blown away. People can’t appreciate the level of interest she has brought to the WNBA. That interest will help those who come after her. Will another player come along and be better than Clark? Almost certainly. But fans will still be part of the game because of the eyes she has brought to it. This will only make the game more popular.

·       Prayers for a quick recovery for Juju Watkins.   It’s unfortunate, but she will recover and be better than ever.

·       One angle I have not heard much about is the potential risk for current NFL head coaches. Are you writing your own termination if you sign off on drafting Shedeur Sanders? Deion has not been shy about saying he would only come to the NFL to coach his son.

Let’s say the NY Giants draft him, and they finish at the bottom of the NFL East again.   Is it a long stretch to expect Deion to bring Prime Time to NY?     You would think they would have a top-ten pick again and give Deion the NY stage.  I am sure the NFL media, NY media, and Giants fanbase would be energized with Deion in town.

·       The Los Angeles Lakers were lucky to dodge the Dan Hurley bullet last off-season. He is a great college coach. However, the antics that have gone on this year would not fly with NBA players.

·       Cam Ward had a great Pro Day this week. This is great news for the Tennessee Titans. His teammate, Xavier Restrepo, did not do well, which could be good news for the Titans.  If Xavier drops to a day 3 pick, it seems likely now. He would be a terrific grab for the Titans. The Titans already have established familiarity with Ward.    We have seen more teammates being drafted together in the past few years. An example is Ja’Marr Chase joining Joe Burrow in Cincinnati.

·       Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh seems more and more like a signing that will happen soon. To me, it looks more and more like a disaster waiting to happen.   In no way does this seem like a good marriage—style play with the fan base and culture of the city.   If I am Pittsburgh, I call the Patriots on draft day. I will offer a conditional 2026 pick. It is a 4th rounder that can be moved to a 3rd based on performance. This pick is for Joe Milton.    Get the big-armed QB to compete. You can draft someone on day three. If all fails, the QB class next year is much stronger.

·       Penn State feels like Michigan in 2023. It also resembles Ohio State in 2024. Almost everyone came back with one goal in mind.    With a less-than-challenging schedule, the season all depends on the man under center.   If he has a great year. He will be in the mix for day one. But a poor season or big games, and he will go the road most quarterbacks have under James Franklin.

·       If Carson Beck comes back fully healthy, he can use the young weapons in Miami. Miami may have back-to-back first-round pick quarterbacks. This will help the program and make offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson the hottest name in college football.

·       College basketball transfer portal with 700 players already is Insane.

·       Jose Altuve is the last remaining player from the 2017 scandal. The team is still winning divisions. They are also going to the playoffs.

·       Am I the only person that didn’t know this news about Michael Jordan’s son?

5 Things to Know About New Penn State DC Jim Knowles

This is a nice get for Penn State. Word was Knowles and the rest of defensive staff were not on best of terms. It will be interesting to see if anyone from PSU defensive staff stays at State College.

Penn State has a new defensive coordinator, and it’s time fans who don’t know about him find out more about Jim Knowles. Knowles is a name most rabid…

Honest Fan Insights on NFL Draft Prospects–Penn State Edition

I have always believed that passionate fans have a deeper understanding of their teams and players than agenda-driven sports reporters. Fans are not concerned if a player was rude to a reporter in the locker room; instead, they focus on the player’s performance and character without being swayed by personal grudges.

These dedicated fans work forty hours a week and reserve their weekends in the fall to watch their teams compete. Many attend a few games each season and often create a special viewing area in their homes to cheer for their teams.

To gather honest opinions on the players from their schools who will be eligible for the NFL Draft, I decided to reach out to my passionate friends who support various teams.

First up is lifelong Penn State fan and former season ticket holder Scott, who discusses the first players expected to be drafted on day one of the NFL Draft.

1. Abdul Carter DE/EDGE 6-3 259

Unanimous All-American 2024

Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year 2024

2 X first-team All-Big Ten 2023, 2024

Second-team All-Big Ten 2022

Strength: Speed to rush the passer.  He switched to DE from being a linebacker.  Physical and aggressive.

Weakness: He still needs more time as an edge rusher.  Can over pursue at times.

What was the best game or performance you remember him having during his career at Penn State? He had an outstanding playoff run. The play I remember most is when he broke through the Notre Dame line and sacked Riley Leonard using just one arm.

Is he destined for success in the NFL, CFL, or WFL?:  First-round NFL draft pick

Would you want him on your team? Absolutely yes!

Likely landing spot:  New York Jets
